The character, Nurse/Dr. Abby Lockhart, portrayed by Maura Tierney, 44, on ER is one of the important characters of the series. She joined the series during the sixth season and remained on the show till the fifteenth season.   The role also helped her to earn an Emmy nomination. The episode which she first made her appearance on was entitled ‘Great Expectations’. She was seen as Carol Hathaway’s labor and delivery nurse and it was a guest appearance. She became a regular member of the ER star cast after three months. Maura Tierney was last seen on the episode entitled Shifting Equilibrium.    Her performance on the series helped her to win millions of hearts throughout the world.

As per the details released by TV Guide’s Web site, Maura Tierney would undergo a surgery due to breast cancer. The lady said in a statement given to TVGuide.com, “I have discovered a tumor in my breast which requires surgery. I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed. My doctors have all assured me this is a very treatable condition.    I’m very optimistic as to the outcome and want to thank everyone who has sent positive thoughts and support. I look forward to going back to work soon”.

The date of the surgery is not decided yet but it has postponed the production of Tierney’s new show, “Parenthood,” by eight weeks. The show is a small-screen adaptation of the 1989 Ron Howard film and would be aired on the NBC network. Previously, it was decided to bring the show on air this fall.
