Sherry Stringfield was born on 24 June 1967 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, US. Her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then settled in Spring, Texas, a sister community of Klein, Texas, where she grew up. She attended the Klein High School. While studying, she appeared in various plays and musicals, such as ‘Oklahoma‘, ‘Mother Courage’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. She joined the acting conservatory of SUNY at Purchase and shared her room with Parker Posey, when she was eighteen years old. She also appeared in numerous Off-Broadway Productions and took the help of a college speech teacher to tame her Texan accent. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts.
She was married to Lawrence Joseph, a journalist, but they separated in January 2006 after seven years of marriage. They have a daughter named Phoebe and a son named Milo.
She earned her first role on the CBS Daytime soap opera ‘Guiding Light’ (1989-1992) in which she played “Blake Marler Christina Thorpe’. She then traveled to Europe for a year and returned to continue acting. She appeared in ‘NYPD Blue’ for its first season. She became much popular with her appearance on the television series ‘ER‘ as “Dr. Susan Lewis“. After leaving ‘ER’ in 1996, she started teaching a script analysis class and directed different plays at her alma mater.
She has also acted in films like ‘54‘ and ‘Autumn in New York’. She appeared in a guest role for the drama series ‘Touched By an Angel’, ‘Shark‘, ‘Law and Order’ and in the television movies ‘Border Line’ and ‘Going Home’. She starred in the film ‘Forfeit‘ in 2007.
She has acted in a recurring role in ‘Tell Me You Love Me’. She filmed ‘The Stepfather’ in 2008. She has also appeared in an episode of ‘In Plain Sight’.
She has done voice-over for children’s television show ‘Blue’s Clues‘ and for the PC game ‘ER: The Game’. She appeared in the ‘Got Milk?‘ advertising campaign.
She was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards in 1996 & 1997 for the Best Performance by an Actress in a TV-Series - Drama for ‘ER‘. She was also nominated for Emmy Awards in 1995-1997 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for ‘ER‘. She has won the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1996 & 1997 for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for ‘ER’ and earned nomination for the same in 1995. She won the Q Award of the Viewers for Quality Television Award in the category- Best Actress in Quality Drama Series for ‘ER‘ in 1996. She was a nominee for the Soap Opera Digest Award in 1991 for the Outstanding Villainess: Daytime for ‘The Guiding Light‘ and in 1993 for the Outstanding Villain/Villainess for ‘The Guiding Light‘.
